One Year Kabbalah Course - Aims (from a course document)

Firstly, welcome to the one year Kabbalah Course run through the website. I trust that you find the year ahead a valuable aid to your continuing studies and work. I will begin by introducing the general aim of the course, the structure of the lessons and the teaching format we will be employing.

The general aim of the course is to present to you a way of thinking based on the Kabbalah and related concepts. Thus we will be employing both the science and art of Kabbalistic principles to demonstrate a way of thinking about the Universe. I make no claim that this is the only way of looking at the Universe, but it may prove to you a useful way of gaining a more consistent and comprehensive perception of your relationship to the Universe.

The structure of the lessons is based on twelve sessions, to which each of which is given a month of study and practice. Each session has a worksheet, which is broken down into session points, work points, reading materials, links, exercises and a link to the discussion area. This worksheet ties together the essential elements of the work ahead.

The first session aims to demonstrate the emanative nature of Kabbalah, both in its theory, practice and communication. The session points provide eleven essential statements about Kabbalah, each of which can be expanded as your time allows. By providing simple seeds of thought, the process of exploration can be guided in a focused direction.

The work points following the session points are for your practical discipline. In session one, it is important to learn to draw the tree. This provides the basic template for all our studies and constrains the work to a glyph both simple and complex. If you are familiar with the Tree and able in its construction, use your artistic ingenuity to create the Tree in other media.

The Reading Materials section synthesizes relevant works by other authors. This is by no means a prescriptive list, of course. Its intention is to provide a central hub from which to work, spanning out to other workers both past and present. As the course progresses, we will develop this list to be more specific and review works as we work on them. For session one, we need only refer to works dealing with the reception and transmission of Kabbalistic teachings through history to place the current work in context.

The On-Line Links section provides further seeds for discovery. In Session One I have provided a link to a vast list of sites that demonstrate relevance to Kabbalah. Again, you may explore these links as your time permits, recalling that it is the history of Kabbalah we are particularly interested in.

The Exercises section should be worked on as the month progresses and follows from the work points. The exercises are designed to activate ways of thinking that will build over time. The section for session one includes four exercises that can be carried out simultaneously and can be continued throughout the following sessions.

The Discussion Area link points to the Templum Group on Yahoo, where we will meet in a virtual fashion, for chat, discussion and posting issues and answers on the discussion board. I see this as an organic reflection of the year, so please ensure that you register with Yahoo, download the Messenger system and sign up to the group.

Finally, I hope this Aims sheet has clarified both the general aim of the course and the specific aims of session one, as well as detailing the method by which the course will manifest. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, and should you complete the exercises to your immediate satisfaction, you may like to write the names of the Sephiroth, commencing with Kether and ending with Malkuth, down the side of this Aims document, one Sephirah to each paragraph, and realise that Kabbalistic structure can assist in the construction of all manner of work.
